"O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! You have set Your glory above the heavens." – Psalm 8:1
I will always remember Asa Skinner. He was a member of my first church in Chicago, Illinois. Asa was a fine executive who was always active. He underwent brain surgery for a tumor, and I wondered how he would be able to tolerate the long recovery period at home. I called on him shortly after he was discharged from the hospital. His wife met me at the door. I asked, "How is Asa doing?" She replied, "Oh, very well." I continued, "How are his spirits?" And she answered, "They're fantastic. Come on, you can see why."
I found him in his tiny backyard, sitting in a chair with his bathrobe on and his head bandaged in white. His wife told me he was studying. As I approached him I noticed that he was looking at the ground through binoculars. When he saw me, he said, "Oh, Dr. Schuller, look at them!" He was watching the ants build a home and transport material. He said, "I've been noticing the wasps. Look at the nest they built." Then he pointed in the far distance where there was a tree and said, "See…in that tree a robin is building a nest."
"The ants, the wasps, the robin…" he said, "Dr. Schuller, this world is throbbing with life. All of life is so beautiful." I thought to myself, Here is a man who has looked death in the face and found a world throbbing with life.
Lose heart and you lose out on life. Take in creation and you re-energize your life.
* * * God, how often my soul has been recharged and my spirit refreshed by catching a glimpse of Your wonderful world. Thank You for reminding me how alive I am as I see the beauty of all You created around me.
